Le Clos des Pélissous is a group of three restored Périgourdine farm cottages situated in the hamlet of Les Pélissous, approximately 8 kms to the north east of Bergerac in the Perigord Pourpre (or Purple Périgord, the colour of the fine red wines of the Bergerac region). Nestling on a hillside overlooking the valley of the Caudeau, a small tributary of the
Dordogne river which it joins just downstream of Bergerac, the Clos des Pélissous offers quiet and relaxation in fine countryside, but with the advantage of being situated at a cross roads offering easy access in all directions. To the east, within an hour's car drive lie Sarlat and the many beauty spots which comprise the Perigord Noir as well as the Vézère valley with its numerous prehistorical caves (Lascaux); to the west, also within an hour by car are St Emilion and the vineyards of the Bordeaux region; to the south the rolling hills of the southern part of the Dordogne and the Lot et Garonne with the many "bastide" towns (Issigeac, Monpazier, Molière, Villefranche du Périgord etc.) and fine castles which were witnesses of the first English invasion of Aquitaine; to the north Perigueux, the charming préfecture of the Dordogne department with its Roman and gallo-Roman vestiges, the Périgord Museum and the medieval streets now occupied by numerous boutiques. Nearer at hand is Bergerac, a lively town with its colourful twice weekly market, its open air concerts and street animations in the summer season. A large hypermarket, numerous supermarkets and many town centre shops in "le vieux Bergerac" offer the opportunity for shopping and souvenir hunting.
The vineyards of Pécharmant and Monbazillac are near at hand and the wine growers most hospitable! Numerous restaurants and "fermes auberges" in Bergerac and in the surrounding countryside offer a wide selection of French and international cuisine.
Horse or pony riding are available at two near by centres, with excursions out into the surrounding countryside, where many rambles are to be appreciated by those who prefer walking. A nine hole golf course is open to the public in near by Mouleydier. Free fall parachuting can be enjoyed at Bergerac airport and canoeing , sailing or water-skiing on the Dordogne river are other open-air activities available nearby.
Le Clos des Pélissous was, until quite recently, a fully operational farm, producing tobacco, Pécharmant red wine (Le Clos des Pelissous was the name used for the latter), and cereals; sheep and cattle were also raised on the property.
The three cottages which comprise the property have been entirely renovated to offer standards of comfort compatible with today's requirements, whilst the charm of the stone walls, sharply inclined tiled roofs and oak beam ceilings have retained a very Périgourdine atmosphere. Two of the cottages have been converted into three gîtes; the third cottage is the home of the owners who live on site all year and who are available to assist with any problems.
The pretty pigeon loft in the centre of the garden now houses the swimming pool machinery. The three houses all face in a southward looking direction with the 12m x 6 m salt water swimming pool with a jacuzzi function as the focal point. Individual gardens or terraces for each cottage or apartment allow occupants to relax or dine in privacy but are sufficiently large to allow several families occupying different accommodation to join together when desired. A large terrace by the pool is also ideal for sunbathing; for the more energetic a "pétanque" pitch overlooking the pool area is available for a game of "boules". A large field next to cottages is also part of the property and can be used by children for playing.
