SARLAT LA CANADA (20 minutes by car) This very picturesque town could be said to be the centre of the Dordogne tourist industry. All tourists eventually visit its attractive \'old town\' area, as Sarlat is one of the most successful towns in preserving its ancient heritage. A stroll through its streets is a source of constant delight. Houses and mansions of varied character stand side by side in apparent disorder. A visit to its market on a Saturday is a must.
MONTIGNAC AND LASCAUX CAVE (15 - 20 minutes by car) The valley of the river Vezere, on which the attractive town of Montignac stands, is the site of many prestigious world famous locations which bear witness to the history of mankind since the dawn of time. Montignac is a peaceful little town whose peace was broken with the discovery of Lascaux by a group of children playing in the woods. Lascaux, the most famous of caves boasts a set of cave paintings dating from early Magdalanian times. A succession of bison, bulls and horses cover the walls of the great chamber and two side passages in prehistory\'s own \'Sistine Chapel\'. Although the original is now closed. Lascaux II is a magnificent replica, authentic in every detail.
BERGERAC (90 minutes by car) Bergerac is a fine city on the Dordogne River, where a tidy cluster of medieval, half-timbered houses back onto the old river port. It is the capital of Purple Perigord (purple being vine) and is the only wine growing area of the Dordogne. 93 Communes produce a wide variety of vintages. This is also a tobacco growing area and Bergerac is the home of the National Institut du Tabac and has a very interesting museum on this maligned product. There are many, many more places of interest to visit in the Perigords, the list is endless.
