Property Location Vergoncey is a lovely small village which is peaceful and ideal for a relaxing break in the French countryside situated between St. James and Pontorson on the borders of Brittany and Normandy and close to the Mont St. Michel. Description of Property This is a typical stone-built cottage located in a small rural village named Vergoncey. In the village there is a small bakers shop selling fresh bread, cakes and some basic provisions, a pretty church and a telephone kiosk.
The cottage has been completely renovated in a beautiful old style and furnished with antiques. It was originally intended for the sole use of the owners and is accordingly of better quality than the average rented property. As you can see in the glimpses shown in the internal photographs the cottage retains much of its original rural charm. There is a good sized living room with a large old granite fireplace for a lovely open fire and an optional in-fire grill for chestnuts etc., two fireside chairs, a double sofa bed and an antique dining table with four chairs. The large traditional kitchen also has a breakfast table and chairs and a new electric oven and hob, a microwave and a fridge freezer. The kitchen is very well equipped with good quality crockery, a variety of cooking pots, coffee makers etc. Downstairs the cottage floor is tiled throughout and decorated with rugs.
There are two double bedrooms upstairs with exposed old beams and pine framed beds. The downstairs bathroom is new and spacious with a good shower and a washer drier in one corner, and a separate WC and washbasin
The cottage has central heating by electric radiator. The radiators are unobtrusive but very efficient if the weather turns cool.
Outside the small rear garden is a suntrap and has been paved with old stone. A garden table, four chairs and two sunloungers are provided for visitors to use outside. An external light and small outside barbecue makes patio evenings possible even outside the summer months.
A charming English couple look after the cottage and ensure that it is clean and ready for your arrival. They will meet all visitors by individual arrangement at the cottage when they expect to arrive.
The cottage is not overlooked but is centrally situated within the village not far from either the bakery or the church. The local people are friendly to all foreign visitors but would never intrude.
The rental price includes allowance for electricity, clean duvets and pillows. Visitors provide their own bedlinen and towels. Please note that changeover day is Wednesday. Other days may be possible by arrangement in low season
A deposit of £100 is required with your booking

Places of Interest There are several lovely local French restaurants offering excellent value for money and wonderful regional cuisine. We like the restaurants at the Hotel Normandie in St. James with its traditional French dining room, the Hotel de Bretagne in Pontorson and the small restaurants in Servon and St Georges de Grehaigne. In addition there are creperies and bars for light snacks.
Monday is market day in St James, the local town which is also famous for its exquisite knitwear factory (there is a factory shop offering discounted products in the town).
Mont St. Michel, one of the seven wonders of the world, is certainly worth a visit particularly if you can go in to the Abbey for one of the services (check times) or dine in one of the restaurants there. We like the Mouton Blanc, a small restaurant on the right hand side as you go up towards the Abbey. Not cheap, but well worth a visit for a pre-dinner drink or for coffee is the bar on the second floor at La Mere Poulard. Find it on the left as you go onto the Mont. It has a special charm and has been visited by many a well known personality all of whom have left a photograph and which are displayed on the walls.
Otherwise, there’s lots more to do and see - St. Malo, the old walled town and Cancale which is a very pretty beach resort nearby, Dinan, an old town by the river which has several interesting shops and artisans along the cobbled high street. Fougeres is famous for its castle which is certainly worth a visit and you can sit outside at one of the adjacent creperies for lunch.
