La Forge is in the heart of Cathar country, its beautiful country location offers countless scenic day trips to many and varied destinations all year round. The Mediterranean is an hour and a half drive away by motorway and the numerous mountain lakes and mountain gorges of the Montagne Noire are just minutes away.

Places of Interest

When you visit the fortified town of Carcassonne you are transported back to the Middle Ages. The cité of Carcassonne a UNESCO world heritage site is the largest medieval fortress in Europe and has 14 towers. To get to the cité you walk through the medieval town with its narrow, winding streets and many interesting shops offering crafts and souvenirs etc. Restaurants and cafes serve local cuisine, why not enjoy a glass of the local wine in the most historic of settings. The Montagne Noire is marked by the diversity of vegetation due to influences from the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. You can observe at a distance of a few miles completely different vegetation and completely different climatic influences. In the Orbiel valley, you have a Mediterranean influence that makes the mimosa bloom. A few miles west, due to a more wet climate influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, beech trees and epiceas are growing. Swimming is also available in a number of mountain lakes, the two closest being at Pradelle and Lac de Montagne. There are many glorious walks and mountain bike tracks for the more active.
