Property Location

L'Oasis is a villa situated on the outer fringe of the town of Salies-de-Béarn, which lies in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques between Bayonne and Pau. Salies is a small, pleasant and very attractive spa town with all amenities, bustling at times but always restful and manageable. The historical centre is a ten-minute walk away. People have long visited Salies to take the waters and this, together with its strategic location, means the town receives a good number of visitors without being too 'touristy'. The surrounding area is agreeable rolling countryside, lush and green with wide rivers that you come across again and again. Palms and mimosas grow very happily in the mild climate, including in our garden. Take a look at these two sites: www.bearn-gaves.com and www.tourisme.fr/office-de-tourisme/salies-de-bearn.htm.

Description of Property

L'Oasis stands in a short lane of detached houses with no through way and a nice countryside feel. Built about forty years ago, the villa has well-proportioned rooms with lots of light and a pleasing sense of space. The lounge-dining room is large and airy, and from it a French window opens onto a patio which catches the sun in the morning, making it a fine spot for breakfast. The three bedrooms are all of similar, ample size. One is furnished in rustic style and has a double bed; the second with its cane furniture contains twin beds, while a folding bed may be set up in the third. Although the kitchen is not enormous, it is quite adequate for preparing meals, with kitchen appliances including a fridge-freezer, cooker, microwave and coffee-maker. The bathroom is a decent size, very light, with washbasin, bath/shower and bidet, the separate toilet being adjacent. From this south-facing side of the house you can see the snow-topped Pyrenees on a clear day. There is a good-sized basement area containing the washing machine, boiler and garden equipment. The garage is large enough to take a car and the garden furniture. The large back garden slopes down gently and has been planted to provide interest throughout the year. Birds are generally plentiful and are frequent visitors to the garden pond. The front garden is also of a good size, and being flat is the ideal place to set up the garden furniture and eat outdoors. There is a television and video with a selection of comedy classics and a reasonable choice of paperbacks. Towels and bed linen are provided. Depending on the time of year, the central heating may be needed and this is charged separately. All in all, this is a house for people who are looking for privacy, space and tranquillity, but who don't want to be in a tiny village miles from anywhere. The owners will be happy to show you round the house and help as required, but will also leave you in peace except for cutting the lawns by prior agreement.

Places of Interest

There is no shortage of activities either close to home or further afield. Tennis, golf, swimming and riding, for instance, are easily catered for locally. If you like walking you can choose between one of the several waymarked paths around Salies or head towards the Pyrénées, while the winding country lanes are ideal for cycling. There are, of course, several towns that are worth a visit, such as Pau, Bayonne and Dax, and the coastal resorts of St. Jean de Luz and Biarritz offer a fine day out. Most visitors to France are keen to try the local food and wine, and there is a good range of restaurants in Salies and neighbouring villages. Getting there: Salies-de-Béarn is 3 km from Junction 7 of the A64 Motorway which runs east-west roughly between Bayonne and Toulouse. There are airports at Biarritz (70 km) and Pau (100 km).
