Geneste Petite Grange is part of an ancient farm complex now including our house, where we live year round, a massive barn and your gite, which we lovingly converted ourselves and is completely detached. The house is sourrounded by forest tracks and lanes freely accessible on foot, by bike or on horseback. Waterfalls and mountain rivers abound, and fishing can also be enjoyed. The fields and roadsides are full of wild flowers, autumnal colours and mushrooms in season. The birdlife is wonderful and the local wildlife includes many butterflies , moths and animals now rare or no longer seen in the UK. No light pollution means diamond bright starry nights. The local wine is Côte Roannaise, with visits and tastings . There are many chateaux, fortified buildings, museums and other attractions. Basic shopping ( groceries, bread, pharmacy) in the village of Arfeuilles - 4 km., Market Day Wednesday. Supermarkets and all needs in Lapalisse (20 mins - Market Day Thursday) or Vichy or Roanne (40 mins each by car.)

The sitting room is comfortably furnished with a sofa and individual chairs. The walls are hung with tapestries and a unique filigree mirror, plus Moroccan wall lights and a huge hanging lamp, also brought back from Marrakesh. The massive rosewood coffee table came from India . A fireplace of handmade bricks built on an enormous single piece of granite, houses our efficient Jotul woodburner. French windows lead on to an enclosed private terrace. Open plan oak staircase. The split level kitchen is spacious with superb views. It is well equipped with all new appliances - microwave, cooker, fridge freezer, washer, toaster, kettle. It has traditional 19th century French furniture and fittings, handmade dining table and lots of good quality stainless steel cookware and cutlery, porcelain tableware, even a champagne bucket and glasses. ( A bottle of bubbly welcomes you on arrival..) The walls are finished in cream painted boards of local Douglas pine. The Gallery Bedroom has designer built, hand painted furniture and comfortable double bed. Lots of storage. Romantic drapes fall on to a rustic balustrade ; the lighting is Moroccan, the colours pale green and cream. The twin bedded room has blue hand painted furniture and yellow walls; lots of storage and panoramic views of the valley and its small villages. Electric heating, duvet / covers, sheets, pillows/cases, & 2 towels per person included. The Italian style shower is really spacious with wonderful views of the garden, valley and further over the mountains. The tiles are hand cut from volcanic stone and the furniture made and painted by us. Even the loo has an interesting view of the orchard, potager (salad garden) and our poultry yard where the antics of our chickens never fail to amuse - and give fresh eggs into the bargain. he woodland garden was made from terracing the mountainside and includes much pretty planting and shrubs and mature trees including numerous walnut, oaks, etc. There are many attractive paths and features and a spring which feeds the main ponds via a well. The garden is dominated by the valley views. A good quality Le Creuset cast iron barbeque with tools and charcoal is provided, also garden table and chairs, sun loungers, sun umberella and numerous places to sit, sunbathe and relax. 4 bikes are available.

By Road: Approximately 7 hours non stop from Calais ( RN7) is 15mins from the house. By Air: RyanAir, Stansted - St Etienne Boutheon ( Car Hire available ) 1hr 15 mins away. Flights also to Lyon (2 and a half hours away) . By Train to Vichy, Roanne or St Germain des Fosses. (40 mins). The local wine is Côte Roannaise, with visits and tastings . There are many chateaux, fortified buildings, museums and other attractions.
