Property Location

The Château de Cardoux, listed as an ‘Historical Residence of Character’, is situated on the chalky, wooded hillsides which overlook the Dordogne valley. On the river’s left bank, it sits east-south-east of Lalinde.

The owners, M. and Mme Henri de Saint-Exupery - a relative of the famous aviator and author Antoine de Saint Exupery, perhaps best known for writing “The Little Prince” - have transformed a medieval haunt into a holiday gîte in one wing of the Château. The Château’s foundations date back to the 13th century and possibly even earlier. In the 15th century its military architecture was restructured due to changes in weaponry. In the 18th and 19th centuries serious alteration work transformed it into what it is today. The Château came into the Saint-Exupery family when, in 1734, Suzanne de Beaudet married Etienne-Jacques de Saint-Exupery, born 1715, which means that it has been in the family for 270 years.

Description of Property

The immense stone walls, ancient beams, stone fireplaces, leaded windows and original floors give a baronial feel to this beautiful Château, which is beautifully furnished throughout. There are many original works of art and pieces of period furniture within the rooms, complemented by soft, natural paints and beautiful linens blending harmoniously with the character of this country Château.

The upper floor contains a spacious master double bedroom with unusual circular en suite bathroom. Two twin bedrooms each with en suite bathroom. A twin bedroom and double bedroom with separate shower room. On the ground floor: The comfortable living room features exposed beams, and a raised stone fireplace with television, video and stereo player. Here you will find access to a further shower room, the kitchen and back staircase, a small study and a cosy reading room. The huge country-style kitchen is well equipped to cater for large parties with its two sinks, two hobs (gas and electric), washing macine, dishwasher, microwave and a table for less formal dining. The formal dining room creates an almost “fairytale castle” impression with dark, solid wood furniture contrasting with the white stone of the dramatic vaulted ceiling. Guests have exclusive use of a private, un-bounded garden. There is a 12 x 6 meter fenced swimming pool which is 1.8 metres at the deep end. The friendly owners live in a separate part of the property and have their own private garden.
